Objects of Nostalgia
The project aims to instruct the useful repurposing of the listed London terrace house. In its after-life it will host the British Museum’s collection currently in storage, and return it to the fabric of Bloomsbury. As the Listed House is an object in decay it will be properly embalmed during the process of this conversion through casting. The house is used as formwork onto which concrete is sprayed to form a new shell, retaining traces of the original facade.
The project is not separate from the technical study, as it walks the line between the slightly surreal and the very practical. In order to develop the proposal, it was necessary to work through the physical process of drenching the terraced house in concrete. As the most intricate part of the facade, the junction between sash window and brick wall was cast in an exploration of the relationship between textural detail and release agent.
