EMBEDDED INTELLIGENCE LECTURE SERIES Excerpt
Curated by Gil Akos, Evan Greenberg & Ronnie Parsons
03 February 2015
New Soft Room, 36 Bedford Square
Embedded Intelligence is a design model, whereby exploring the intrinsic properties of material, biological and machinic systems produces novel strategies for design. All materials are embedded with implicit capabilities; by manipulating these materials through simple actions, we can begin to develop an understanding of their inherent properties, and explore ways to exploit these in the design of material systems. These material systems can be further developed by exploring the many ways in which natural systems use similar strategies to sustain effective performance. Finally, design can be enhanced by exploring the inherent capabilities embedded within fabrication systems and how these can inform design strategies in order to produce novel material effects.
The Embedded Intelligence Lecture Series aims to interrogate these three main lines of inquiry -- material systems, natural systems, and machinic systems -- which comprise the notion of Embedded Intelligence in architecture and design. Each presenter will deliver a lecture built around a series of curated questions pertaining to the subject matter, streamed live via Google Hangouts. The series ends in a roundtable discussion with the curators investigating a series of prototypical case studies designed through the model of Embedded Intelligence.
